At the centre of “a lavishly decorated grotto” was a huge bed on which a nude model portraying Venus snuggled half-covered by a sheet, on a mattress that intended to look like glowing coals, with lobster and Champagne on the bedside table. She was dozing, said Dali, “on an ardent couch, consumed by the fever of love, dreaming burning dreams”.
